Vaginal infections are very common, and will in principle affect all women. Normally they are not life threatening, but result in intense irritation and a smell that is socially severely handicapping. In many cases they are recurrent, and may constitute a life-long suffering. Fungal infections are treated with antibiotics, both systemic as well as local treatment, which eventually results in the development of resistance against the antibiotic. Antimicrobial resistance is extremely serious, and has by WHO been defined as one of the biggest threats to global health.

Gedea Biotech’s compound GA101 is a natural substance that always has been part of our environment, and that is known to be harmless. It acts by physically inhibiting the development of fungal and bacterial biofilm anchored to the mucous membrane. Thereby it inhibits the ability of the fungus to establish itself in the vagina. It is unlikely that this mechanism should initiate the development of resistance. GA101 is currently being formulated to a vaginal pessary that is easy to use against vaginal fungal infections.
